Their names are Legion: Lady Govs win Relays

By MIKE SMITH
Capital Journal Staff

It came down to the last leg of the last race.

Jen de Hueck overtook Aberdeen Central’s runner in the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay to deliver the championship of the Pierre Legion Relays to the host team. It was the first time since 1987 that the Lady Govs have won the Relays.

Pierre came into the day’s final event leading the defending champion Golden Eagles by one point.

“I don’t think the girls realized what was at

stake,” said coach Craig Ullmann. “That’s what makes the 1,600-meter relay such an exciting race. It’s a credit to all the girls as the little points add up.”

The team finished fourth in the race but their time of 4:16.67 was a season best.

The Govs finished third in the standings as they were without Quincy Christie, who tweaked a groin muscle in practice and sat out the day.

“If this was a state meet, he probably would have competed,” said Govs’ coach Geoff Gross. “But there are bigger meets down the road.”

Fans did not get a chance to see him race against new state sprint record holder Cole Tucker of Rapid City Central. Tucker swept the three short sprints, setting a new meet record in the 200-meter dash. He was named the winner of the Robinson Award as the most valuable male athlete. Rapid City Central fell short of winning its third Legion boys’ title in four years. They were three points short of Aberdeen Central.

Tucker’s teammate Leia Jackson was the women’s Robinson winner. The Cobbler standout won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, setting a new record in the 200.

Two other new record were set on Friday, both in the girls’ division. Jessica Engel of Sturgis set a new mark in the 1,600-meter run and Kelsey Maloney of Sioux Falls Washington broke the record in the 3,200-meter run.

The Lady Govs won a pair of relay races and had one individual champion in shot putter Kris Schaffer. Schaffer’s winning throw of 41 feet, 5 inches broke her own school record in the event by a half-inch.

The foursome of de Hueck, Abbie Mitchell, Michelle Monroe and Amy Brandner won the 3,200-meter relay. Brandner and de Hueck was also part of the winning 1,600-meter sprint medley team that won along with Yutzil Ayala and Nicole Erbele.

Mike Zellmer won both the shot and discus for the Govs.

“If we had Quincy, we would have been right there for the championship,” said Gross.”But we still pulled out a third place because of our depth.”

The Lady Govs also depended on depth to win the championship. They had 13 place-winners. The Govs also placed in 13 events.

Among the individual standouts was Ariana Hunt, who took second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Torri Ice was second in the triple jump and high jump. Ice equalled her career-high in the high jump at 5 feet, 23 inches and set a new personal best in the triple jump at 34 feet, 6 inches.

Stanley County’s Stacy Huss won both the 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Her distance in the triple jump was a season-best 35 feet. She was second in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:20.78 was less than a second off her school record time set in last year’s state meet.

Matt Bump placed second in the 1,600-meter run and third in the 3,200-meter race for the Govs. Matt Tetzlaff was second in both hurdle races. Michael Tveidt equaled his career high in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.

“It’s exciting that we have that depth developing,” said Gross. “Guys like Alex Helbig and Alec Anderson have been good leaders for us.”

The junior varsity will compete in a meet in Miller on Tuesday. The varsity will be in Sturgis for the Bear Butte Classic on Saturday. Pierre will again see Rapid City Central as well as defending state champion Rapid City Stevens.

“Quincy should have a showdown with (Tucker and state 100-meter champion Cody English) in at least one event,” said Gross.

Ullmann said the season has exceeded expectations at the halfway point.

“The coaching staff has been great,” he said. “They’ve got the girls’ aimed to where they need to go.”
