Records take beating at Class AA Al Sahli track and field meet

American News Sports Writer

It was a record-shattering day at the Al Sahli Invitational indoor track and field meet as six Eastern South Dakota Conference schools tuned up before moving the sport outdoors.

Eight records were tied or broken at the Class AA meet at the Barnett Center on Saturday.

Junior Quincy Christie of Pierre and freshman Brittany Page of Watertown each won three events and received the Matt Harvey Award as the meet's most valuable male and female athletes.

For Christie it was the first track competition of the season.

"I came out and did my best. I came out and competed hard," said Christie, who also plays running back for the Governors' football team.

The junior sprinter won the 55-meter dash, long jump and triple jump, and ran a leg on a third-place 1,600-meter relay team.

Despite her success in the indoor competition, Page is looking forward to getting outside for meets.

"It was fine in here," said Page, who also received most valuable honors at a meet in Huron last year. "Outdoors will be better."

She set a new record in winning the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.2 seconds, and ran on two record-setting relays.

Aberdeen Central's Amy Seyer attempted a record-breaking high jump but couldn't quite clear the bar. The current record is 5 feet, 3 inches.

"Coach (Derek) Robey said they were pretty good jumps," said Seyer about her three attempts at 5-3. "I probably just got tired. My approach was a lot better this time because I've been jumping more during the week."

Seyer cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.

Like almost every athlete at the meet, Seyer is ready to compete outdoors.

"Outside is better because I can use spikes and that makes it easier. Outside there's the wind but you learn to live with it," the senior said.

On the track, a pair of familiar foes turned the 3,000-meter run into a dual. Watertown's Danny Scott pulled away from Central's Andy Cahoy near the finish line to post a win. Scott's winning time was 9:50.61 and Cahoy crossed the line in second-place at 9:55.8.

"I didn't run as well as I would like to," said Cahoy, who also ran on the Golden Eagles 3,200-meter relay team that finished second. "My times will get better when we go outdoors. I look forward to getting outside."

Cahoy might have gained some knowledge he can put to use in future races against Scott.

"He has a pretty strong kick. He's tough to beat. I'm more of an endurance runner and he has more of a sprint at the end of the race," Cahoy said.

In the boys' division, Central won two individual events and two relays. Jon Beitelspacher won the shot put with a toss of 47-2 and finished second in the discus at 132-2. The discus competition was held outside at the Simmons Middle School field.

For the second consecutive meet Tony Arampatzis captured the pole vault title with a vault of 13-6. The 960- and 1,600-meter Central relay teams also posted wins.

The boys' team took a look at some athletes in new events.

"We ran some of the kids in different events this time," said boys' track coach Mike Flakus. "We put together a couple of good relays. The kids take a lot of pride in the relays so it was a lot more exciting."

Seyer was the only Central first-place finisher in the girls' competition. Lexi Jares had a busy day with a second in the long jump, third in the 55-meter dash, fourth in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the high jump.

The young girls' team showed improvement from last week's indoor meet.

"Overall, we're making progress," said assistant coach Bill Martens. "We competed hard. We need to keep working and getting better."

Central competes outdoors in the Huron Early Bird on Friday. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
