Central boys win Pierre Legion track and field meet

American News Sports Staff

Both the boys' and girls' team titles came down to the last event, the 1,600-meter relay, at the Pierre Legion Relays on Friday.

The Aberdeen Central boys' 1,600-meter relay team of Kyle Weisbeck, Derek Belden, Taylor Ford and Jordan Moench outsprinted Rapid City Stevens to the finish line to win the relay and the meet.

The Aberdeen Central girls' 1,600-meter squad finished sixth in the relay and second in the meet.

The Golden Eagle boys edged Rapid City Central by three points (143-140), and the Pierre girls won with 106 points to 102 for Central.

"It got down to the mile (1,600-meter) relay," said Central boys' coach Mike Flakus. "If we win the relay, we win the meet. If Rapid City Central wins, they get first and we're second. They've got some good runners."

In the deciding relay the Golden Eagles finished less than a second ahead of the Rapid City team.

Central sprinter Kyle Weisbeck qualified for the state in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Golden Eagles continued their domination in the jumping events. Jayme Liddell won the triple jump and Chris Grey was second. Another pair of jumpers, Zach Moore and Chris Stangl, finished first and second in the long jump.

Tyler Williams jumped to a third-place finish in the pole vault. Jon Beitelspacher picked up a second place in the shot put.

Flakus noted that sprinter Taylor Ford and distance runner Andy Cahoy had good meets. Cahoy won the 3,200-meter run.

"Overall, it was good for us to win the team title," Flakus said. "We used this meet to get better. We are getting better and that's still our goal."

The Central girls pulled together for a second-place finish as a team.

"We didn't go into the meet trying to win it," said Central girls' coach Peggy Cox. "We didn't run everybody in four events. It was by far the best performance we've had this year. I knew the potential was there, but we hadn't been able to pull it together for some reason."

The Golden Eagles turned in a host of season best performances at the meet including Andrea Sjomeling in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, Christina Kusler in the long jump, Brittany Arment and Chelsea Paulson in the 3,200-meter run, Andrea Joy in the 400-meter dash, Kayla Weisbeck in the 100-meter dash and Ali Arampatzis in the pole vault. Weisbeck hit a provisional state qualifying mark in the dash and Arampatzis made the automatic height in the vault.

The 800-meter relay team also sprinted to its top time of the season.

"The kids really competed hard today (Friday) and I was very pleased," Cox said. "This is about the time of the season you want to start putting your relays together and putting kids in places you think they can be successful. We showed up in a lot of places. It's a good confidence builder."

The Central track teams travel to Huron on Tuesday for a quadrangular meet with Mitchell and Watertown.
