Howard Wood special event fields picked

From staff reports

Published: 04/29/05 1:55 am

A loaded boys 400-meter dash special event should be the highlight of the 81st edition of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 6-7.

The race, slated for 7:30 p.m. May 7 at Howard Wood Field, features all three South Dakota defending 400 champions as well as a previous North Dakota state champion. But none of those runners are even the favorite. That spot is held by Lincoln's Sayfe Jassim, who narrowly missed the state's all-time 400 record earlier this season.

The annual special events at Howard Wood are some of the best athletic competitions of the year in South Dakota, with the best performers from all the classes, as well as out-of-state talent, racing. In a change of format, the boys and girls special events will not be on the same night this year. The girls, who also will run a 400, race Friday at 7:40 p.m.

While Jassim has the best time in the state this season, the whole field will be right on his heels.Rapid City Central's Cole Tucker (Class AA), Milbank's Ryan Conrad (A) and Northwestern's Daniel Young (B) are the South Dakota defending champs and Wahpeton's Jayce Miller is the North Dakota entrant.

Tucker recently broke the state 100-meter record and Conrad won the all-class Gold Medal at state last season.

The rest of the boys field features Pierre's Quincy Christie, Rapid City Stevens' T.J. Boehler and Vermillion's Ben Oberle. For the girls, the top entrant might be Bridgewater-Emery's Heather Wollman, the defending Class B champ in the 100, 200 and 400.

The other girls entrants are Hills Beaver Creek's Cassi Tilstra, Mitchell Christian's Andrea Nielsen, Lead-Deadwood's Breynn Feterl, Wahpeton's (N.D.) Allie Smith, Rapid City Stevens' Samee Pagel, Gayville-Volin's Emma Erickson and Parker's Abby Plucker.Smith is the reigning Class B 200 and 400 champ in North Dakota. Erickson won South Dakota's Class B cross country title last fall.
