6 athletes double their Douglas
fun By Sean Welsh, Journal
Sports Writer
RAPID CITY -- Six different
athletes won a pair of events at the Douglas Early Bird high
school track and field meet, which featured several teams from
around the Black Hills, on Saturday at Patriot
Stadium.
"The team performed very well," said Stevens
head coach Paul Hendry. "Again, it was pretty early in the
season, but they get out there and they competed very
well."
"We were happy with our kids," said
Central head coach Dave Dolan. "Our young kids just kind of
gradually keep improving and that's what we have to do
throughout the course of the season."
Much like the
Rapid City Developmental meet last week, not all of the teams
were at full strength. There were, however, some solid
individual performances across the board.
Rapid City
Stevens' T.J. Boehler had a solid day, winning the 200-meter
dash with a time of 23.26 seconds and the 400-meter run with a
time of :50.80.
Ben Jasinski of Rapid City Central just
missed sweeping the jumping events, however, he did win the
high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and the long jump (20-41/4). He
took second in the triple jump behind St. Thomas More's Dusty
Nowotny.
Eric Flores was the third male competitor to
take home two wins, as the Custer thrower threw the discus
158-8 and the shot put 59-71/2 to win both events.
On
the girls' side, Douglas' Shannon Hellman continued her
dominance in the hurdling events, taking home the first-place
hardware in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. She had a
time of :15.10 in the 100 and a 47.23-second clocking in the
300. Hellman also tallied a second-place finish in the
200-meter dash to close out her day.
Central's Courtney
Ollerich had a triple jump of 33-8 and also posted a leap of
17-11/2 in the long jump to win both events.
Jessica
Engel was the other competitor to take home two individual
gold medals on Saturday, as she won the 800- and 1,600-meter
runs. The Sturgis Scooper posted times of 2:25.66 and 5:24.73,
respectively.
The boys hurdling team from Stevens
remained solid, as Alex Holmgren won the 300-meter and Matt
Hanley won the 110-meter and took second in the
300.
Central's Leia Jackson and Stevens' Brittany
Garner each ran in one open sprint, with Jackson taking the
100-meter dash and Garner the 200-meter.
Cobbler Cole
Tucker was again steady, winning the boy's 100-meter
dash.
"Cole Tucker, in the 100, he ran very well,"
Dolan said. "And our 4x100 relay team I thought ran very well.
It was very pleasant to see them run a time that fast this
early in the season."
Central's 400-meter relay team
won the boy's event with a time of 43.58
seconds.
Stevens' Samee Pagel was the only participant
to break the one-minute mark in winning the girl's
400-meters.
Rapid City Christian had an athlete win an
event when Alida Oegema won the 3,200-meter run.
On the
boy's side, three different thinclads won the longer running
events, with Central's Seth Breckenridge (800-meter run),
Douglas' Dan Black (1,600-meter) and Pine Ridge's Alex Pine
(3,200-meter) all getting first-place
finishes.
Breckenridge pulled a late comeback in the
800, passing Stevens' Marshall Kambestad on the final
straightaway to win by only seven-tenths of a
second.
"We've got a lot of youngsters - ninth, 10th
and 11th graders - and very few seniors in both boys and
girls, so we've got to be patient and let them just continue
to get stronger and gain some confidence," Dolan
commented.
Raider Bryan Keck won the boy's pole vault
and Sturgis' Christy Mortenson won the same event on the
girls' side.
Custer's Sarah Uhrich, won the girls high
jump. Denna Goodrich (Spearfish) and Lynnae Fox (Newell) won
the girls discus and shot put events,
respectively.
Hendry seemed satisfied with the way the
team performed, despite not being in full force.
"We
didn't run all our individuals in as many open events as we
might later on in the year, but there were a couple (good
individual performances): like Matt Hanley in the 110 hurdles
and actually 300 hurdles too. Alex Holmgren, of course, in the
300 hurdles. Justin Kluk had a pretty good day throwing. Samee
Pagel won the 400, in her first race of the
year."
