Athletes try to shine in B.H.
Track Classic snow By Jason
Gross, Meade County Times-Tribune
STURGIS -- Saturday's Black Hills
Track Classic in Sturgis left the folks talking about more
than winning performances.
Temperatures around
freezing, accompanied by strong breezes, plagued athletes and
fans. Snow began to fall later in the morning
session.
Coaches and meet officials huddled
during the break and decided to cancel the rest of the meet.
Sturgis Activities Director Mike Paris said the remaining
events will not be rescheduled.
The "Special 400" meter
dashes were a meet casualty. Contestants were introduced to
the fans during the break with each athlete receiving a
T-shirt.
Rapid City Central's Courtney Ollerich won
both the girls long jump (16-feet, 7-3/4 inches) and triple
jump (34-1/2).
Another Central athlete, Cole Tucker,
claimed the boys 200 crown in 22.14 seconds. Teammate Matt
Dolan cleared 6 feet in the high jump for top
honors.
Kelsey Moen of Rapid City Stevens outleaped the
competition in the girls high jump, soaring 5-2. Stevens'
Brittany Garner earned the 200 dash title in 25.85
seconds.
Alex Whitesell took a considerably longer
route to first place. The Stevens representative forged a time
of 10 minutes, 5.79 seconds to win the boys 3,200
run.
Both Stevens' 3,200 relay teams captured top
honors. The boys finished in 8:18.35, and the girls turned in
a 10:40.13 clocking.
Rapid City Christian's Alida
Orgema won the girls 3,200 in 12:11.38. Dusty Nowotny of St.
Thomas More soared 44-7-1/2 en route to the boys triple jump
title.
Lynnae Fox of Newell also emerged as a double
champion. She hurled the discus 139 feet, and her best shot
put throw was 42-2.
Central head coach Dave Dolan said
with what teams have as far as qualifying times, the risk of
injury to some athletes is pretty great. He added if athletes
like Cole Tucker and Leia Jackson are hurt, that takes a lot
away from a team.
"Our times have been better at some
other meets," Dolan said. "As far as the way they competed, I
just told them the weather is the same for everybody out
there. You go out and just do your best."
Moen's high
jump effort is a personal best, according to Stevens head
coach Paul Hendry. He also praised Erin Beisner, who turned in
a personal best in the girls long jump en route to second
place finish.
"Even with the weather, we had some good
performances," Hendry said. "I think our kids know how to take
care of themselves, get warmed up, and stay warm.
"Just
do what you can do, and don't worry about the
elements."
Hendry said the weather and meet
cancellation were unfortunate. "We needed a day to compete and
get on the track. It just didn't work out that
way."
