Queen City coronates Stevens
By Mike Besso, Lawrence County Journal

SPEARFISH -- A trio of area athletes "doubled their pleasure" at the Queen City Classic high school track and field meet at windy Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish on Saturday.

For the second day in a row, Lynnae Fox of Newell swept the girls weight events. Fox won the shot put (42-feet, 7-inches) and discus (138-3). Her throws were improvements over her winning throws at the Southern Hills Invitational at Hot Springs Friday.

Dusty Nowotny, a sophomore at St. Thomas More, won the boys long jump (20-6) and triple jump (41-7).

Sturgis' Jessica Engel captured titles in the girls 800 meters (2 minutes, 28.98 seconds) and 1,600 meters (5:26.10).

Rapid City Stevens, the defending Class AA state champion, swept both the boys and girls team titles at Saturday's meet. The Raiders won four of the five relay events, claiming the boy's title with 170 points. Campbell County of Gillette, Wyo., was second with 146.20. Rapid City Central finished in third place with 140 points.

Stevens claimed the girls team honors, totaling 193 points. Campbell County finished in second place with 170 and Rapid City Central was third at 85.50.

Leia Jackson of Rapid City Central sprinted to a winning clocking of 12.51 seconds in the girls 100 meters. Jackson is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during an indoor meet in February.

"Leia had a very good race," said Central coach Dave Dolan. "We're being careful, bringing her back slowly."

Stevens' thinclads Brittany Garner and Kari Carda won the 200- and 400-meter dashes with times of :25.88 and 1:05.93, respectively.

Haylee Weisgram, an eighth-grader competing for Rapid City Stevens, won the 100-meter hurdles finals in a time of :15.99. Amanda Davis of Sturgis posted a time of :15.88 in the prelims, but finished third in the finals.

Stevens' Anne Doshier was the 300-meter hurdles champion in :49.34. Stevens also notched firsts in the girls 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays. Central collected first place in the 400-meter relay.

Courtney Ollerich of the Cobblers jumped a winning distance of 16-111/4 in the long jump.

D.J. Thompson, a sophomore at Spearfish, held off Alex Whitesell of Rapid City Stevens at the finish of the boys 800-meter run.

Cody English of the Raiders won the 100-meter dash. English's teammates Chris Moran and T.J. Boehler were fourth and fifth, respectively. Corey Beefert and Andrew Reed of Central finished second and third, respectively

Central's Cole Tucker continued his impressive early-season form, winning the 200-meter dash (:23.05). Bob Hewitt-Gaffney of Campbell County nipped Tucker in the 400 meters.

Matt Hanley of Stevens was the 110-meter hurdles champion. St. Thomas More's Mike Hartley claimed runner-up honors.

Central's Ben Jasinski topped the high jump competitors, reaching a height of 6-0. "Ben was so close at 6-4," said Dolan. "It was a cold and windy day. It's tough to get best performances under those type of conditions. Our handoffs in the 4-by-200 relay did not perform very well. They know what they have to do to improve."

Justin Kluk of Stevens produced a winning throw of 48-51/2 in the shot put.

Stevens' coach Paul Hendry credited the efforts of Cody English, Chris Moran and Haylee Weisgram.

"The guys and girls came out better than they did the last two weekends," said Hendry. "We're getting better each weekend."

The next meet for most of the schools competing at the Queen City Classic will be the Track-O-Rama in Rapid City next Saturday.
