Track athletes spread wings at Early Bird meet

By MIKE SMITH
Capital Journal Staff

Pierre track athletes had a successful outdoor debut at the annual Early Bird Meet Tuesday at Trautner-Hollister Field.

The Govs had 10 individual champions in the four-team meet along with two firsts in relay races. The Lady Govs had nine individual first places and swept the four relay races.

“We had countless personal best records,” said boys’ coach Geoff Gross. “Every week we give out certificates for personal bests. It will be

fun to hand these out because it means people are improving and seeing the benefits of their work.”

Multiple winners for the Govs included Quincy Christie in the 400-meter dash and long jump; Matt Tetzlaff in both hurdle races and Mike Zellmer in the shot and discus.

“Mike really sticks out,” said Gross. “He had a personal record in the shot put (48 feet, 1 inch, the best by a Gov thrower in six years).”

Christie went 21-4 in the long jump, only four inches off his mark that won at state. His winning time in the 200 was 51.87 seconds.

“That was a nice time, even though he wasn’t challenged,” said Gross. “Michael Tveidt also had a nice time (third at :55.57) for the first time he stepped on the track.”

Tane Owens won the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, six inches, a half-foot better than his best jump in 2004. Tyler Peterson also improved by six inches in placing second in the high-jump.

“To improve by six inches is almost unheard of,” said Gross.

Matt Bump won the 1,600-meter race, Alec Anderson the 800-meter run and Alex Helbig the 100-meter dash.

“Matt has put in a lot of miles and it will be exciting to see how he improves,” said Gross. “We have some great distance runners in Anderson, Travis Fitzke and Robert Nagle.”

Lady Govs coach Craig Ullmann also will be busy printing and passing out the personal best certificates this week.

“We did exceptionally, considering the wind,” he said. “But in South Dakota, the wind blows, so you must get used to it.”

One of the stars of Tuesday was eighth-grader Yutzil Ayala. She won the 100-meter dash, the long jump and was a member of two winning relay teams.

“She was first in all her events,” said Ullmann. “She is doing the things we were looking for when we brought her up.”

Freshman Katie Buhler won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Junior Torri Ice was first in the high and triple jumps.

“Torri had her personal best in the triple jump (33-feet, 11 inches) and it was third best on the school list,” said Ullmann. “Katie is a gutty little runner.”

Ariana Hunt was on three winning relay teams and was second in the high jump.

In the field events, Kris Schaffer became the second Lady Gov to ever clear 40 feet in the shot put. Schaffer’s throw of 40 feet, 1/2 inch gets her closer to record holder Mary Morris’ 40 feet, 6 inches set nine years ago.

Polly Gill won the discus with a personal best throw and was second to Schaffer in the shot put. Amy Brandner won the 800-meter run and was a member of two winning relay teams. Sierra Moeller took first in the 400-meter dash and was on a the winning 800-meter relay team. Ariana Hunt was also a member of two winning relay teams and was second in the high jump.

Molly Wulf cleared a career high 7 feet, 6 inches to take second in the pole vault.

The Govs and Lady Govs will have a bonus meet Friday when they compete in a six-team meet in Huron. The meet will begin at 4 p.m.
