Raiders sweep; Cobblers' Tucker breaks state 100 mark
By Padraic Duffy, Journal Sports Writer

RAPID CITY -- Rapid City Stevens won both the boys and girls divisions of the Rapid City Track-O-Rama with a nice blend of their old standbys and some fresh, new faces on a windy Saturday at O'Harra Stadium.

The Raiders got typically strong performances from Brittany Garner, Marshall Kambestad, Alex Holmgren, Cody English and Taryn Sahli plus some coming-out performances from Samee Pagel, Annie Pfeifle and Kellie Herrmann to run away with the girls division and squeak out a 133-126 victory over Rapid City Central on the boys side.

"It was a beautiful day, a little windy, but the kids came out and just performed well, all around," Stevens head coach Paul Hendry said. "The sprints, hurdles, relays, field events, distance, pretty much all the way around it was a wonderful team effort."

Garner had a great day for the Raiders, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 11.91 and 25.13 seconds, respectively, and also anchoring the winning 400- and 800-meter relay teams.

While the Raider junior was pleased she felt there was still some room for improvement.

"It was great," Garner said of her day, "but you can always run faster."

Kambestad also showed that he's rounding into mid-season form, winning the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:15.24 and finishing second in the 1,600 to Campbell County's Paul Burke. Burke ran a 4:28.06 to Kambestad's 4:29.76.

The most impressive time of the day didn't even come in a finals heat, as Central's Cole Tucker rode a strong tailwind to a 10.32-second clocking in the prelims of the 100-meter dash to set a meet and state record. The time breaks the old state record of 10.4 seconds set by West Central's Slade Hinrichs in 2002. Unfortunately for Tucker, he didn't even win the event, as English ran a :10.57 to Tucker's :10.6 in the finals for the victory.

"The 100- and 200-meter runners loved it at their backs," Central head coach Dave Dolan said of the strong wind blowing out of the southeast. "The other runners probably didn't like it so much."

Tucker fought through the wind to win the 400 in a time of 50.73 seconds.

The wind was blowing steadily at 20 mph for much of the afternoon with gusts much stronger than that, making the backstretch a chore in all of the races, and forcing the 300-meter hurdlers to start with the wind directly in their faces.

Two of the better hurdlers in the state didn't seem to mind it all that much, however, as both Holmgren and Douglas' Shannon Hellman continued their recent dominance of that event. Holmgren won the boys event in 40.25 seconds while Hellman won the 300 in :47.14 and the 100 hurdles in :14.54.

Another area athlete that doubled up on the day was St. Thomas More's Dusty Nowotny. The defending state Class A triple jump champion won both the triple and long jumps on Saturday with leaps of 43-71/2 and 21-1, respectively. The Cavalier sophomore nipped Central's Ben Jasinski (43-51/4) and Andrew Reed (20-101/4) in the two events.

"It's more competition, a higher level, with all the 'AA' schools and you just jump better," Nowotny said of winning the two events. "I was just feeling really good."

Jasinski completed a hat trick of sorts, finishing in the top three in all three jumping events. He finished third in the long jump, second in the triple and won the high jump with a leap of 6-4.

Stevens' Herrmann won the girls shot with a toss of 36-4.

"She's only an eighth grader," Hendry noted. "That was probably a pretty big surprise for a lot of people."

Custer's Eric Flores showed that his early-season success in the throwing events was hardly an aberration as he won the shot put by nearly four feet over Gillette's Jake Chick with a toss of 57-31/2. Chick came back and edged Flores in the discus, however, beating the Custer junior by three inches, 149-7 to 149-4.

Stevens also had winners in the girls 800 (Pagel), 3,200 (Sahli) and high jump (Kelsey Moen). On the boys side, Matt Hanley (110 hurdles) also won.

Other individual winners for Central were Courtney Ollerich (girls long jump) and Seth Breckenridge (boys 800).

The Cobblers will next be in action on Friday at the Pierre Invitational, while Stevens will head to Scottsbluff, Neb., for the Western Nebraska Twilight. The rest of the area schools will take part in the Custer Invitational on Friday.
