Despite some ominous clouds and the occasional spritz of moisture Saturday, no true rain fell at Howard Wood Field.

What did fall with regularity there, however, were records during the Elmer Hansen Warrior Invitational track and field meet. Fourteen meet records were set between the A and B divisions.

Watertown's Brittany Page set three individual records en route to being named the Class A girls MVP. Roosevelt's Tony Thompson was named the Class A boys MVP, while Freeman's Dustin Letcher and Hills-Beaver Creek's Cassi Tilstra took home MVP honors in the B division.Watertown won the A girls team title, while Aberdeen Central won the A boys crown. The Freeman boys team and Hurley girls team won in the B division.

One performer who got in early on the record-breaking march was Roosevelt's Allison Eckert. She finished the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 48.88 seconds to eclipse the previous record set by her twin sister, Krista, last year. Ironically, the record Krista broke in 2004 had been set in 2003 by Allison."She doesn't mind," said Allison of the Eckerts' friendly rivalry. "If I do good, she's happy."

Allison's time would have ranked 19th in the 3,200 on the last week's national list of top track performances on dyestat.com, the top Web site for national high school track news. Her time was also eight seconds faster than her winning time at state last season.

Page set meet records in the 100 (12.20), 200 (25.40) and 400 (59.40). O'Gorman's Mallory Peck topped her own record in the pole vault with an effort of 12-0. Other girls record-breakers included Canistota's Jacey Olsen in the 300 hurdles (48.40), Beresford's Renae Hyronimus in the Class B 200 run (27.30) and Garretson's Sarah Hanson in the Class B 3,200 run (12:16.90).On the boys' side, both 3,200 records were broken. Austin Vandenberg of Lincoln won the Class A race in 9:56.48, and Hurley's Robert Wilson claimed the Class B race in 10:38.45.

Among the other record-breaking marks:

  • TJ Wendt of Harrisburg threw the discus 153-0 for a new Class B meet high mark.

  • Shane Strasser of Freeman won the Class B 300 hurdles in a record time of 42.20.
  • Jordan Paula of Brookings crossed the line in the Class A 200 dash in 22.30.

  • Hills-Beaver Creek's medley relay team won in a Class B-best 3:49.80.

Thompson earned his MVP honors by winning an unusual combination of events. He won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.20 and anchored the Rough Riders' Class A first-place 800 relay team(1:34.60). Thompson also threw the shot 52-5 to win an event not usually competed in by top hurdlers."I like both equally, I don't have a favorite," said Thompson. "I like to run hurdles. I like to say that I'm the only guy over 230 pounds who can run them."

Tilstra ran anchor on H-BC's first-place relay teams in the 3,200 (10:35.20), the 400 (54.20), and the medley (4:41.10.)Letcher anchored Freeman's winning 3,200 relay team (8:43.40)and fought a spirited battle with Lincoln's Thomas Madut in the open 1,600. The two battled throughout the final lap of the race, but Madut crossed the line just ahead of the leaning Letcher in a time of 4:34.69. Madut beat Letcher by just .28 of a second.

"I could feel it," said Madut. "I could hear him coming, I could hear his feet. But I didn't look back, I just looked forward."
