Golden harvest at Corn Palace Relays

By MIKE SMITH
Capital Journal Staff

Pierre track athletes reaped a golden harvest at the 58th annual Corn Palace Relays Saturday in Mitchell.

Competing in near perfect weather, the Pierre boys won five first place medals.

“No team points were kept but Pierre would have come up on top if they did,” said Govs’ coach Geoff Gross. “We won five of the 14 events. There was really no negative things that can be said.”

Heading the list for the Govs was Quincy Christie,

who won the 100-meter dash, the long jump and was a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay team.

In the sprints, Christie finished behind senior Kyle McGregor of Kimball in the preliminary heats. But in the finals, the Gov junior blazed to a season-best time of 10.71 seconds. Cameron Rogers was fourth in the 100-meter finals.

Christie went 21 feet, 8 3/4 inches to in the long jump. He was third in the triple jump.

Michael Tveidt entered the high jump pits for the first time this season and cleared 6 feet, two inches. He beat his closest pursuer by a full two inches.

Michael Zellmer surpassed 50 feet again in the shot put to win. He overtook defending ESD shot put champion Gerry Ebel of Yankton.

“He waited until his last throw to get that 50-footer,” said Gross. “It was exciting to see him pop that last throw.”

Zellmer also placed high in the discus, taking third with a throw of 138 feet, 10 inches, a season high.

Eighth-grader Matt Tetzlaff had the best time in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles. He slipped to third in the finals but still posted a career-best clocking of 15.96 seconds.

“He was right there in the finals before stumbling over a hurdle,” said Gross. “He was second in the 300-meter hurdles which is encouraging.”

Tane Owens medaled in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 3 inches.

“Pole vault is a tough event and its nice to see him rewarded with a medal for all his hard work,” said Gross.

The Lady Govs were missing about a half-dozen girls who were on the band trip to Chicago, including shot put standout Kris Schaffer. But the Lady Govs acquitted themselves well.

“We were very competitive,” said girls’ coach Craig Ulmann. “Just about everyone set a new personal record in their events.”

Torri Ice had a standout day placing second in the high jump, third in the triple jump and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. She had season best performances in both the hurdles and high jump.

The 400-meter team of Yutzel Ayala, Alexa Berg, Renee Rodgers and Ariana Hunt placed second with their best time of the season.

“Our relay teams were short-handed due to the band trip but we did OK,” said Ulmann. “We were fourth in the mile and sprint medley relays.”

Ulmann said young Drew Miller surprised people with a sixth place in the discus. She broke 100 feet for the first time, going 102 feet, 3 inches.

Stanley County also competed with Stacey Huss having the best showing. She was second in the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump and fifth in the long jump. For the Buffs, Michael Kendall was in the top 10 in both the long and triple jump.

Pierre hosts its annual Legion relays on Friday. Much attention will be paid to the 100-meter showdown between Christie and Cole Tucker of Rapid City Central. Tucker broke the state record at Saturday’s Track-O-Rama in Rapid City, going 10:32. in the preliminaries. The old record was 10.4 seconds by Slade Hinrichs of West Central in in 2002.

“Rapid City Central will be the big dog here,” said Gross. “They have some outstanding sprinters and jumpers. It’s going to be fun to see Tucker and Quincy run together. They’re both juniors so they’ll be duking it out this year and next.”

Another event to watch is the high jump where Tveidt will face off against Ben Jasinski of Rapid City Central. The two tied for third place at last year’s state tournament. Jasinksi went 6 feet, 4 inches at the Track-O-Rama.

Ulmann said the Cobbler girls are also strong, particularly in the sprints and field events.
