Central boys' 400-meter relay team wins

RAPID CITY - A quartet of Aberdeen Central runners started their season off on a high note Thursday during the Track-O-Rama track and field meet in Rapid City.

The 400-meter relay squad of Charlie Smook, Chris Stangl, Derek Belden and Kyle Weisbeck captured first place in a time of 44.52 seconds.

It was the lone first place finish on the day for the Golden Eagles in a meet that featured quality kids from a three-state area.

"It was so much fun. I hope we can do this every year. It was a great meet for our kids," said Central boys' coach Mike Flakus.

Rapid City Central won the boys' division with 109 points. The Eagles were seventh with 34 points.

It was the outdoor debut for Aberdeen Central, while most of the other schools were competing in their fifth outdoor meet of the season, said Flakus.

"I thought we had some bright spots," he said. "We've got a lot of kids that are coming along and making some improvements."

Weisbeck qualified for state in the 200-meter dash and Stangl qualified in the long jump and the triple jump.

To put the quality of competition into perspective, Flakus pointed out the solid performance of his 1,600-meter relay team despite finishing fifth.

He said the times of the athletes might not look overwhelming, but "everything was finished into the wind."

Rapid City Stevens scored 150 points to win the girls' division. Aberdeen Central was eighth with 29 points.

The Eagles did not win any events, but did manage to qualify a pair of individuals for the state meet.

Ali Arampatzis punched her ticket in the pole vault and Christina Kusler qualified in the long jump.

Kusler's second place leap of 17 feet, 3 inches is currently the second best jump in the state in all three classes.

"Christina Kusler in the long jump had a great jump today," said Central girls' coach Peggy Cox.

Cox was pleased with what she saw of her team's initial performance outdoors.

"It was pretty good, overall," Cox said. "It was good to get outside and compete."

The Eagles travel to Huron on Tuesday for a meet that was rescheduled from last week. Central then heads to Pierre on Friday where Flakus said the Eagles normally shine.

"That's a fast track," Flakus said of Pierre. "That seems to be one of the meets that we really qualify quite a few people."
