Junior Jesse Morrow put himself in the Watertown High School record books and helped the Arrow boys win the team title Tuesday in the East Central Qualifier track and field meet at Madison.
Morrow snapped the school record in the boys' pole vault with a winning vault of 14 feet, nine inches - topping his previous personal best of 13-1 and breaking Josh Sandvik's 14-3 mark set in 2001.
“We've had two meets and two school records. Sometimes you can go years without setting a record,” said Watertown head coach Vic Godfrey. “It's kind of cool to have this happen like that.”
Brad Monahan, another Arrow junior, set the school record in the boys' triple jump at a dual meet Saturday in Brookings.
Tuesday's meet was a quadrangular that also included fellow Eastern South Dakota Conference schools Brookings and Huron as well as Class A Madison, the host school.
Watertown won the boys division with 90 points compared to 74 for runner-up Madison. Huron won the girls division with 96, 12 points ahead of the Arrows.
“That was a great show for the guys,” said Godfrey. “It just turned out to be a real nice meet. It was kind of windy when we got there, but it was sunny.”
Morrow highlighted Watertown's performance with his unexpected vault.
“Obviously it was a surprise to everybody but Morrow, who said Monday night that he had figured it all out,” said Godfrey.
Morrow is part of a strong junior class for the Arrows that also includes Monahan, hurdler Keith Newman and weight man Aaron Jung. Monahan didn't compete Tuesday but Newman (100 and 300 hurdles) and Jung (shot put) each also won events for the Arrows.
Newman won the hurdle races in 16.1 and 42.2 seconds, respectively. Jung took the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 11.5 inches.
Freshman Andy Erickson added a victory in the 200 dash (24.4 seconds). Seniors Jordan VanMaanen and Tyler Heller, junior Andy Foley and freshman Billy Anderson teamed up to take the 3,200-meter relay (8:47).
The Arrows also won six events in the girls division, including two wins apiece by juniors Brittany Page and Leslie Brost. Page won the 100 (12.2) and 400 (58.7) dashes. Brost took the pole vault (12-0) and triple jump (34-7).
Godfrey said Brost, who holds the state record in the pole vault at 12-9, made two strong attempts at 13-0.
Senior Carissa Hauck took the 200 dash (26.9) and joined Page and sophomores Maggie Lauseng and Taylor Kellogg on the winning 800 relay (1:48.1).
Watertown will make its first home appearance of the season on Friday when it hosts the 48th Watoma Relays track and field meet at Allen Mitchell Field.
Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The running events are slated to start at noon.
