and three relay wins

ABERDEEN - The Pierre boys track team backed up its early
confidence with an impressive performance at the Al Sahli Indoor
meet Saturday.
The Govs took first place in the team
standings by a wide margin over second place Watertown. Pierre won
five individual events and swept the three relays for eight
wins.
Last year's team, which would go on to win a state
championship, won six first place trophies at the Sahli
Invitational.
The Lady Govs had some strong individual
showings and finished fifth among the six teams. Six of the eight
ESD teams competed in the event.
The standout for the Pierre
boys was sophomore Jarrett Klinger. Klinger was named the boys'
outstanding athlete after winning both the 55-meter and 200-meter
dash. He was also a member of the winning 960-meter relay team. This
is the fourth straight year that Pierre has had the outstanding male
athlete.
"We're still not at full strength," said coach Geoff
Gross.
Defending state 110-meter hurdle champion Matt
Tetzlaff of Pierre showed he is still the one to beat after setting
a meet record in winning the 55-meter hurdles. His time of 7.66
seconds broke his own record. Quinn Holden was fourth and Seth
Brotherton fifth in a display of the Govs' depth in the event.
Tetzlaff was also third in the 55-meter dash with Cameron Rogers
fourth.
Travis Fitzke of Pierre beat senior Cole Lemke of
Aberdeen Central in the 800-meter run despite getting knocked by
someone cross the track. Fitzke still finished more than three
seconds better than the Golden Eagle in second place. One year ago,
Lemke shared the meet's most valuable athlete award with Pierre's
Quincey Christie.
Lemke would set a meet record in winning
the 1,500-meter run. Alec Espeland of Pierre was second, Dillon
Paulsen fourth and Kris Monroe fifth in the event.
Klinger,
Rogers, Lucas Solberg and Devin Rounds took top honors in the
960-meter relay. Tetzlaff, Rogers, Fitzke and Jacob Parsons were the
winners in the 1,600-meter relay. Completing the relay sweep was the
foursome of Matt Bump, Espeland, Brice Drapeaux and Fitzke in the
3,200-meter relay.
Other individual placers for the Govs were
- Bump third and Monroe fifth in the 3,000-meter run; Paulsen third
in the 1,500-meter run; Andrew Smith fifth in the high jump; Graham
Schuetzle third in the long jump; Rounds third in the triple jump;
Alex Trumble fifth in the triple jump; Brandt Payne second in the
shot put; Chad Johnson fifth in the shot put; Trey Owens fifth in
the pole vault and Evan Fuller sixth in the pole
vault.
Winning individual championships for the Lady Govs was
Alexa Berg in the 55-meter hurdles and Raven Cummings in the long
jump.
"Raven and Alexa did great jobs for us," said coach
Craig Ullmann.
Other place winners for Pierre were Mollie
Holden, third in the 55-meter hurdles; Cummings fifth in the
200-meter dash; Jen de Hueck, second in the 800-meter run; Abbie
Mitchell, fourth in the 800-meter run; and Berg fifth in the long
jump.
"Jen anchored our 800-meter team and ran down two girls
to help us finish third," said Ullmann.
Lady Gov relay teams
were both third in the 960-meter and 1,600-meter relays.
The
Watertown girls nipped Huron by two points in the team standings
(106-104). The Arrows' Leslie Brost was named girls' outstanding
athlete. Brost tied the meet record by clearing 12 feet 6 inches on
the pole vault and also won the triple jump.
Brittany Page
of Watertown set a meet record in the 55-meter dash.
The
Pierre boys and girls will have their first outdoor meet on Tuesday
when they host the annual Early Bird meet at Trautner-Hollister
Field, weather permitting. Field events begin at 3:45 p.m. with the
running events at 4 p.m.
