High School Track & Field: Watertown shot putter shatters 12-year-old record

Records are made to be broken but at the Al Sahli Invitational Track and Field Meet for Class AA on Saturday a 12-year-old meet record was shattered.

Aaron Jung of Watertown recorded a shot put distance of 60 feet, 5 inches to break the old record established by Scott Bain of Huron in 1996. Jung bettered the old mark by 6 feet, 6 inches.

Watertown won the boys' division of the meet, which included six Eastern South Dakota Conference teams, with 143 points to 96 for Pierre. Aberdeen Central, the host school, scored 83 for third place. The indoor meet was held in the Barnett Center on the Northern State campus.

The Watertown girls' team followed suit by scoring 134 points for first place ahead of Aberdeen Central with 114.

Two girls' records were broken and three marks fell on the boys' side. The record that received the most attention was the one set by Jung.

“I did a lot of off season training and working on my technique with the coaches,” the senior said. “I've been focusing on getting my leg underneath me and just going for it.”

He shared the Matt Harvey Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet award with Matt Tetzlaff of Pierre who set a meet record in the 55-meter hurdles. Tetzlaff won the hurdle event in a time of 7.6 seconds, finished second in the 55-meter dash (:06.7) and ran a leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay team.

Tetzlaff broke his own hurdle record from last season at the meet. “I was feeling good during warm ups,” said Tetzlaff, a junior. “I came out and ran a clean flight of hurdles and it felt really good.”

The third boys' meet record was established in the 3,200-meter relay won by Pierre in 8:23.4.

Senior Brittany Page of Watertown won the 55-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and set a new record with a time of 1:00.2 in the 400-meter dash. She was named the Matt Harvey Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet. The senior credited hockey for part of her success.

“I played hockey all winter and then I would train for track after school,” she said. “I don't really care for indoor meets but this is a pretty good meet.”

Page's teammate, Leslie Brost, turned in a record performance, winning the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet.

The Aberdeen Central girls won three events, all distance races.

Courtney Neubert, who battled an illness this week, won the 1,500-meter run in 5:20.9 to record her fastest career indoor time in that event. Brittany Arment won the 3,000-meter run by 28 seconds and the 3,200-meter relay team of Arment, Brynn Flakus, Taylor Maine and Jenna Jerde won in 10:58.

“I have to take my hat off to our distance runners,” said Central girls' coach Jim Appl. “That's going to be a strength of this team. This is a little stepping stone. Like we say in practice every day, 'Take it one step at a time.' That's what it was today. We had some kids take some really big steps and others took little steps along the way to improvement.”

The Central boys' team won three events. Jordan Punt crossed the finish line in 2:08.9 in the 800-meter run and Jared Hannigan sprinted to a time of :23.9 to win the 200-meter dash. The 960-meter relay team of Marcus Wylie, Hannigan, Alex Pistulka and Ethan Remily broke the tape in 2:01.3.

“I was happy with the way the meet went the whole day,” said Central boys' coach Mike Flakus. “For an indoor meet, our times weren't too bad. All the kids got in a couple of events. I saw some improvement even from last week, which you're always looking for. I thought it was a great day and we got some things accomplished.”

Both Central coaches and their teams are looking forward to the outdoor season. The Golden Eagles are slated to compete Friday at the Huron Early Bird Invitational beginning at 4 p.m.
