Eagles participate in rainy Huron track and field meet

HURON - The Aberdeen Central track and field teams almost got weathered out of the Huron Early Bird Invitational for the second time.

The Huron meet was scheduled for two weeks ago but weather forced a postponement. The meet was held Tuesday despite rainy and cold conditions and seven teams participated. It marked just the second outdoor meet of the season for the Golden Eagles.

The Central boys' team ran a lot of open events on the track and competed hard in the field events.

"We didn't put our normal relay teams out there," said Central boys' coach Mike Flakus. "We had some guys in open events. The weather wasn't all that good. For the circumstances, the kids ran pretty well."

A trio of sprinters, Derek Belden, Kyle Weisbeck and Taylor Ford, made good use of the meet.

Belden finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.33 seconds) and Ford qualified for the state meet in the 400-meter dash with his second-place time of :52.32. In the field events, Mike Hilgemann placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet.

"Derek Belden ran well in a couple of relays and ran good splits," said Central boys' coach Mike Flakus. "Kyle Weisbeck ran well for us and Taylor Ford qualified in the 400 and ran a good split of :52.3 in the relay. Mike Hilgemann placed in the shot."

Travis Kamm cleared 5-7 in the high jump and picked up a third-place finish.

"We worked out pretty hard yesterday (Monday) so we didn't think our times would be that great. It was the second outdoor meet for us so it was important for us to go to the meet despite the weather. We just wanted to be able to compete," Flakus said.

The Central girls' squad claimed one first-place finish and was second or third in several more events.

Andrea Sjomeling won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of :15.75 and added a second in the 300-hurdles (:48.64). In the field events, Brittany Bauer was third in the shot put (34-10) and sixth in the discus (104-5). Whitney Morsching went 5-7 for third place in the high jump.

"In the shot and discus, their hands get really cold and then they have to pick up the cold shot or discus," said Central girls' coach Peggy Cox. "It ended up not being too bad a day. It drizzled and at the end of the meet the wind picked up and it was cold."

The 400-meter relay team of Kayla Weisbeck, Lexi Jares, KaSara Sutton and Leah Wensmann took second with a time of :52.13.

"We had some other kids place. Brittany Arment was fourth in the mile (5:44.69) which was a good time for her today (Tuesday). We didn't load up on events because we ran last Thursday and will run on Friday. The kids were excited to compete again. They were glad to be outside even against adverse conditions," Cox said.

Central will compete in the Pierre Legion Relays beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday.
