Stevens girls, Natrona boys nab Queen City track wins

SPEARFISH -- The Rapid City Stevens girls and Natrona County (Casper, Wyo.) boys each picked up team victories at the Queen City Track and Field Classic at Lyle Hare Stadium on Thursday.

Stevens nipped Campbell County (Gillette, Wyo.) by a single point, 139.5 to 138.5, to grab the first team championship of the 2004 outdoor track season.

"It was definitely a close battle, but, honestly, we weren't too concerned with the team points," Stevens coach Paul Hendry said. "We're just looking to get some good competition."

There was definitely that. Campbell County brought its usually tough team into town and led both the girls and boys competitions for a good portion of the day.

Stevens' girls got typically strong performances from Brittany Garner (won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes), Julie Schwengler (won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.51 seconds to break her own meet record) and Nichol Deckert (won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:23.49).

The Raiders missed out on one of their major scoring opportunities when their 400-meter relay team dropped the baton between the second and third legs. The mistake dropped them into 12th place in an event where they usually compete for first.

"We got some really good performances," Hendry said. "I could just go on, but it was a good day. It's nice to have three meets in a row where we perform well."

Douglas' Shannon Hellman performed well too. The senior hurdler did something very familiar, winning both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in convincing fashion, but she started the day doing something she hadn't done before. She won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches, the first time she has competed in the event since 8th grade.

Other area winners on the girl's individual side were Courtney Ollerich of Rapid City Central (long jump), Newell's Lynnae Fox (discus) and Sarah Skinner of Sturgis (pole vault).

The Rapid City Central 400-meter relay team and the Sturgis medley relay team also took home firsts.

On the boys side Stevens found itself right there with Natrona and Campbell County throughout the day. But in the end Jake Morrison of Natrona proved to be too much.

The Casper hurdler won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and also ran the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay team. He brought his team back from a 20-meter deficit in convincing fashion, running down Stevens' T.J. Boehler. Morrison also set the meet-record in the 300-meter hurdles with his time of 38.90 seconds. Natrona's 400-meter relay team also set a meet-record, with a time of 43.72 seconds.

Rapid City Central's Cole Tucker turned some heads with a personal-best time of 49.89 seconds (a new meet record) in the 400-meter dash before taking second to Stevens' Cody English in the 200.

"He'd never run that fast before," Central head coach Dave Dolan said of Tucker's 400 time. "He came back and was pretty happy, ecstatic, about that."

Central finished in third (girls) and fourth (boys) but Dolan feels the team is rounding into form nicely.

"We're trying to get the right people together," Dolan said. "We're trying some people in some places they haven't been in before and we've got a lot of sophomores and juniors running that we're trying to develop. They haven't run at this level before and we're just trying to get them some experience."

Central is looking forward to the return of Jared Stalley (sprints and jumps) and Chris Jensen (400) to help on the boys side.

Other area winners in the boys competition were English (100- and 200-meter dashes), Faith's Luke Enos (high jump) and Sturgis' Frosty Paris (discus). Central also took the 800-meter and medley relays.

Most area teams will be in action at next weekend's Track-O-Rama at O'Harra Stadium.

HOT SPRINGS - The Hot Springs Bison swept the field at the rainy Southern Hills Invitational track meet on Thursday.

Hot Springs standout athlete Joe Beehler picked up a pair of wins, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15 seconds. He also won the 200-meter run with a 22.90 second clocking.

For the girls, Lead-Deadwood's Breynn Feterl took the 200-meter title (:27.93) 400 meters (1:02.18).
